Applying for IM Residency as a Tulane med student

Make sure you convey your intention to apply for residency in internal medicine to Dr Chakraborti. Setting up a meeting with Dr C is strongly encouraged.

You will need a departmental (chairman's) letter for IM as one of your rec letters, plus 2 rec letters for most IM residency programs. A few programs will ask for departmental letter + 3 rec letters. These are all separate from your MSPE (dean's letter).

How to obtain an IM Departmental letter:

  1. Complete the online data form Links to an external site.
  2. Contact Ms. Sallis (lsallis) to arrange a meeting with the chairman of medicine. This will occur automatically if you sign up for an sub-internship in Internal Medicine.
  3. If your sub-I is scheduled for after August, there will be date in August for you with Dr Verne prior to the ERAS deadline
  4. Joint-program students (med-peds, etc) and Prelims who are doing an IM year: Yes, you still need a departmental letter. No, you do not necessarily need to do an IM sub-I. Contact Ms. Sallis for more info.
