Mistreatment
What is Mistreatment?
Some direct quotes regarding potential mistreatment from previous students (not exhaustive) are listed below:
- "Some negative ward team dynamics were creating a lot of stress and a poor learning environment. Yesterday, [the student] was hesitant to escalate any concerns, but this morning after talking to more [the student] gave [the resident] permission to reach out to Dr. C on [the student's] behalf.
- As a brand new 3rd year, [the student] was not sure how or when to reach out, and also expressed concerns about negative back-lash if [the student] reported anything. I tried to reassure [the student] that you have always been a strong advocate for the medical students and that we want to foster positive and safe learning spaces."
Reporting Mistreatment
The culture of IM is to maintain a zero-tolerance policy for mistreatment of any kind; including but not limited to gender/sexual violence or harassment (Title IX ), health or safety. Issues regarding the learning environment are also not tolerated.

- While I am absolutely in favor of reporting any issues, I personally ask that you also consider bringing the issue immediately to my attention.
- I would prefer to make the attempt to address the situation immediately, rather than have you languish in an uncomfortable (or worse) situation.
- I recognize the worry that students have regarding the reporting of those who have evaluation/grade authority over you as a student; however in my opinion, it is entirely my job to protect you against such reprisals
