Study Resources & Handouts

Read some each day!

Study strategy for the clerkship: The IM clerkship suggests a good question bank (like U-World) along with an overview resource to which to refer back when you miss say, 12 endocrine questions in a row. Finally, have a larger resource handy, not intended to go through but for the occasional deeper dives on a topic. Too many resources can be a problem too.

All of our recommended books and medical apps can be found on the Matas IM Library Guide: https://libguides.tulane.edu/clerkship/IM Links to an external site.

Recommended Resources

  1. Symptom to Diagnosis: An Evidence Based Guide.  Eds: Stern P; Cifu AS; Altkorn D.
    • This is an excellent book for those who need help generating a differential as it starts with symptoms and explodes into different paths which to go down.
  2. Step-Up to Medicine. Steven Agabegi.
    • A good study aid/overview resource to use as a supplement while doing study questions.
  3. Pocket Medicine Links to an external site.. Sabatine M. Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins. ($45)
    • The book all the interns carry out in their white coats.
  4. Case Files Internal Medicine Links to an external site., 5th Ed. Toy EC, Patlan JT, Warner MT.
    • A popular resource that presents IM topics as clinical cases.
  5. IM Essentials Links to an external site. Alguire PC. Ed. ($45 if ACP member;  free to join)
    • While this was a great resource for IM clerkships and still available, it's no longer being actively supported by the ACP
  6. [not available through Matas] USMLE World Step 2
  7. OnlineMedEd Links to an external site. by Dustyn Williams (one of our former residents).
    • Some students find it to be helpful. It has >100 hours of online content, which I haven't personally reviewed, so...

Text books (just for reference; not reasonable to get through one of these during the 8-week clerkship)

  • CURRENT Medical Diagnosis and Treatment 2019. Rabow MW; McPhee SJ; Papadakis MA.
    • Dr C read this book cover-to-cover during intern year. It took him 9 months.
  • Andreoli and Carpenter's Cecil Essentials of Medicine.
    • a.k.a "Little Cecil's" this is the abbreviated version as there is a 2-volume set as well. More readable that Harrison's.
