Module 1: Examining Job Titles

Examining Job Titles

Overview

Now that you have gotten your results from Focus 2 and know some career pathways of interest, it is time to start exploring job titles and job tasks.

Identify Career Tasks that Align with Your Interests, Values, and Personality

Once you have started to identify your interests, values, and personality and reviewed Focus2’s recommendations, begin to "heart"    or save occupations of interest (or look at your list if you already have one). Go back to these occupations, look at the job tasks, and create another list with job tasks of interest (or use the comments section under that occupation).

Research Job Titles and Industries

There are several ways to research industries and job titles. Click each + icon to learn more.

Activity: Mini-Job Search

Now that you have job titles that interest you, perform a mini-job search. Open up Handshake Links to an external site., Tulane's platform for jobs and internships, and type in job titles or industries that you found from the resources listed above. Look for real job listings that sound appealing and save them. Examine the job tasks, preferred/required qualifications, and experience. Consider how you can set yourself up for success when applying to similar roles in the future.

Tip

Don’t limit yourself to the resources discussed here—there are other search engines or job boards you can use. For example, many cities and states will have job boards listing local opportunities. In New Orleans, worknola.com Links to an external site. is a great one!

Looking Ahead

In the next module, you will learn about career conversations, another way to explore careers and industries. These conversations give you the chance to learn about the academic backgrounds of industry professionals (What were their majors? What degrees do they have?). This will also give you another window into occupations or industries of interest.
