01-Sp20-Biomechanics and Biotransport
Fundamental principles of continuum mechanics and mass transport will be applied to biological systems at the cellular, tissue, and organ levels. The topics of this course are mechanical forces and stresses / strains / rates of strain in biological structures; constitutive models for biological materials, the relationship between structure and function in tissues and organs; methods to measure the mechanical properties of cells and tissues; biological fluid flow and blood rheology; cell adhesion; diffusion and convection in biological systems; transport of gases between blood and tissues; and drug transport in solid tumors. The lab section of the course will provide training in biomechanical measurement as well as in analysis of cell transport in a parallel-plate flow device.
