Welcome!
This class will familiarize the student with the power of “place,” through investigating its past, about whom and what shaped that place—and why you want to learn more about it. Everyone has experiences with places, and in this class, you are not only tasked to explore such landscapes (with a focus of North America), but also learn about how other peoples and cultures experience their own landscapes, with different ecological and social effects. In this course we will focus on learning the different methodological approaches of geography, with particular emphasis on methods in preservation and cultural geography. You will learn how cultural analyses can enlighten us about the landscape around you. Through class work and an independent project, students will learn how to “read” landscapes and uncover the geographies of power.
